Running the Little Race

I’ve heard the above scripture used a lot in sermons. A point that a lot of preachers fail to get across is that it’s not just one big race to the glory in the sky!  Life is full of little races too. You can preach to me every day about that “big race” but I guarantee my stamina for it will fizzle out and my zeal will go on vacation.. Bye, see ya, I’m OUT! 🙋💃👙🍹
I’m a single mother of an 11 year old with special needs so thinking about running a life long race to attain some heavenly prizes sounds far off and distant, kinda like “Okay I can work on that sucker in like 20 years.” What I need to focus on is the little races, like for me sometimes getting my son to school in the morning or taking care of my needs so I can be a good parent. Eating healthy foods (becuz Im to the point of poor health unfortunately) singing a song to God on my down time, these are all little daily races that I’m struggling to do right now, but they are just little victories waiting to happen! And really all those little victories sum up the end of the “big race”.

So whatever your little race is, maybe volunteering in the community or just completing that test at school, get excited about finishing it! Get excited about the little things in life because God sees all those little races we complete every day. He promises us rewards here and when we finally finish the “big race” too. The serenity prayer sums it up best…

God of Hope

It has been a long while since I last posted an encouraging devotional. I had little encouragement myself this past year which was full of disappointments and doubts. They mainly revolved around situations and other people, I would like to say that I’m back “on fire” for Jesus that everything is figured out and set right, but it’s not. Some answers I will never get and some situations will not change. The good news is that I can change despite them.

Someone told me that I was in a season where God was being quiet. To me I was in a season of anti-hope. I felt like I had built myself up for the let down along with the  help of some others in the church, but through it all I have been saying “God will work it out because I’m tired of trying”.

 I have been making some not so healthy decisions this past year (like not even going to church or talking to God on my own) but lately I started checking the daily verse on my cell phone and listening to a little Christian radio here and there. God really is working it out, because I’m not trying at all. I can feel myself getting closer with Him again and this time around I don’t feel fanatical or emotional about it, everything seems normal if that makes sense.

The other day the verse above caught my attention, I never noticed that the word says our God is a God of hope and when I read it hope didn’t seem like such a bad thing anymore. The verse goes on to say that He will fill us with the peace and joy in believing so that we may abound in hope!! I was living this scripture before I even knew about it. Let’s just say that I have a deep understanding of the first 7 words in this famous verse…

 “…but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 ESV

Christ on Stage. A Poem

The curtains are raised, were all on a stage but were not alone.

Accepted by love, remember it’s enough even though others dismiss when they hear your faith.

They leave the audience, but they will always be spectators, sitting but not seeing, watching but not hearing. Oh mute idols let my people go!

The light always overcomes the dark, and even a small flame is greatly noticed at night.

We love, we pray, we speak up when needed and hope for God to break through the barriers.

Love is what they all want to see, love on stage is what we should be. Amen

Romans 13:8 “[ Love Fulfills the Law ] Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law”

Return of an Unclean Spirit Part 1

Jesus_demons-cropped“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.” Luke 11:24-26 ESV

I used to read this passage and feel unsure about myself, as well as the spiritual things I was facing. I thought “If the Holy Spirit lives inside of me and I have been filled with the Holy Spirit, then how could an unclean spirit come back upon me (or my home) and bring more with it?? The answer to the problem is a full house, we gotta be like Nazareth’s inn when Jesus was born, “No room!” 🙂 So… what should we fill our house with? Of course the filling of the Holy Spirit is a great place to start, but that is a broad answer for a simple question. The Holy Spirit is more than any of us can understand or imagine, just like God we can only relate to Him as we experience Him, and read about Him in the Bible. So what does the word say about the Holy Spirit that could be used to fill up our house?

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 ESV

Sometimes we think of this scripture as a standard for living, and that we have to work toward these attributes, but it’s a promise, and the seeds are already in us. The flesh will only profit the opposite of the fruits, when we walk in the spirit and walk by faith, then we will see them manifest.11-2012_Fruit-Bowl-of-the-Spirit_Herron So if you are struggling with anger, when you get angry start thanking God that you have peace, that you have the fruit of the spirit. Thank God that your kids have it, and speak it over yourself, your family and your home. I sing it over myself and home, it’s the only way I can remember them all, and it always changes the atmosphere. When your house is full of joy there is no room for a spirit of depression, and that goes for all the other unclean spirits out there “You keep on knocking but you can’t come in!”
